National Officer – GMB National Office

GMB National Office are currently seeking to fill a vacancy for a National Officer who will work within the Public Services Section, but the successful candidate must be willing and capable of working across both of the GMB industrial sections, if required.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

GMB is a general trade union: we’re proud to represent working people from across the professional spectrum and all walks of life. We are currently seeking to fill a vacancy for a GMB National Officer who will work within the Public Services Section, but the successful candidate must be willing and capable of working across both of the GMB industrial sections, if required.

Our union is a strong campaigning organisation that fights for the improved working rights of our members: from pay, health & safety and holiday, to equal pay, better protection of terms & conditions and dignity in the workplace. If it matters to our members, we fight to help them achieve it.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to be part of a dynamic and progressive team helping to deliver on the key industrial strategy at a national level: this is a senior officer role leading the union’s negotiating and campaigning objectives across the organisation. Understandably, the role requires the successful candidate to be able to demonstrate significant negotiation and bargaining experience, as well as a proven track record of delivering membership growth through successful campaigning and organising strategies.

As a National Officer at GMB, the post-holder will also be expected to represent GMB publicly, whether with the media, politicians, or company leaders, and the ability to develop and maintain strong working relationships, sometimes in complex situations, is a must.

The successful candidate will:

  • Set the overall industrial sectors’ organising objectives through the democratic processes within the sectors; demonstrable leadership and interpersonal skills is therefore a must
  • Lead and develop effective working arrangements with employers, officers, lay reps, other trade unions, the TUC and politicians; excellent relationship management skills are a must
  • Provide national leadership, specialist knowledge and representation nationally on all industrial negotiations and membership campaigns; therefore, possession of strong influencing and organising ability, together with a proven track record of negotiation and representation, is a must
  • Be a real team player, who demonstrates flexibility, adaptability and initiative

Information about the role:

  • Though the role is based at national office and will therefore be required to be in regular attendance in Euston, London, the union will consider requests for the standard place of work to be located in another GMB office in one of our regions.
  • The successful post-holder will be expected to attend regional or national meetings/events across all four nations of the UK, so a willingness to travel is a must.
  • The hours of work for this post are designated as ‘unspecified’, and there will therefore be a requirement for the successful candidate to work some unsocial hours, which may include some weekend or evening work, when required by the role.
  • Assessment Centre will be held on Wednesday 6th December, followed by interviews on Thursday 7th December.

In return, we offer excellent terms and benefits, including:

  • Final salary pension scheme
  • Employee Assistance Programme
  • Childcare Assistance Scheme
  • Season ticket loan
  • Cycle to work scheme
  • Generous holiday allowance
  • Eye Care claim back Scheme
  • Annual Leave Purchase Scheme
  • Annual Health Check

This is a varied and challenging role; if you think you may be who we’re looking for and if you feel you meet the criteria outlined in the person specification of the job description, we’d like to hear from you.
